The disc golf season rarely sleeps and this weekend was no exception. The 2015 National Tour is over, leaving disc golfers to spread out around the country to enjoy some time at home, some of their favorite tournaments or some preparation for the 2015 United States Disc Golf Championship (Men’s and Women’s). This past weekend, there were three A-tiers throughout the United States–The Green Mountain Championship at Smuggle’s Notch, the Eric C. Yetter Champions’ Cup XXIII and the 2015 Outlaws tournament.

Ricky Wysocki and Catrina Allen win big at the Green Mountain Championship

The Green Mountain Championship was definitely the most popular tournament this past weekend as far as top pro attendance goes. On the men’s side, Ricky Wysocki, Paul Ulibarri, Nate Doss, Simon Lizotte, Avery Jenkins and more were all in attendance this year. It was a special weekend for both Nate Doss the disc golfer and Nate Doss the brewmaster. In addition to a weekend of great golf, Doss joined Fiddlehead Brewing Company to create the Understable IPA. After a rough opening round shooting unusual sub-1000 rated golf, Doss stepped up to storm into second place for the event. He had a great event and an exciting weekend, but no one was keeping up with Ricky Wysocki on the disc golf front.

Ricky Wysocki must really enjoy the beautiful Smuggler’s Notch facilities. He won the Green Mountain Championship in 2013 and 2014, and he wasn’t about to give up his title in 2015. Wysocki shot hot throughout the tournament, but what really separated him from the pack was a crazy 1100-rated second round 49. In a round where most competitors couldn’t break 60, Wysocki gained at least 5 strokes on each and every golfer.

Wysocki doesn’t just win at the Green Mountain Championship. He wins big. In 2013, when the tournament was just a B-tier, Wysocki crushed Doss by 11 strokes. In 2014, Will Schusterick was in attendance and closed the gap, but Wysocki was still able to coast to a 4 stroke win despite giving up 3 in the final 9. And here we are in 2015 and Wysocki is back to dominating the event, this time by 9 strokes. Rounding out the top 5 were Doss, Ulibarri, Tyler Grady and Steve Brinster.

Catrina Allen was up against some stiff competition on the women’s side of things, too. Valarie Jenkins, Sarah Hokom and Des Reading were all in Vermont to challenge Allen as she rolls through the end of the 2015 season. Despite a mid-tournament surge from Val Jenkins, Allen was able to take the victory after a punishing final round. Her 1019-rated 61 brought her from one back of the lead all the way up to a six stroke victory over Jenkins. She’ll be in attendance at next week’s United States Women’s Championship and we’ll see if she can ride this momentum to victory over Paige Pierce and other top female challengers.

Andrew Fish outlasts Jeremy Koling for a big A-tier victory at the Eric C. Yetter Champions’ Cup XXIII

Andrew Fish has quietly been making a name of himself as we keep seeing him on popular YouTube channels at tournaments like Throw Down the Mountain or the Maple Hill Open. Fish traveled to Pennsylvania this past weekend for the Eric C. Yetter Champions’ Cup XXIII and was met by Jeremy Koling for a battle that became a two-horse race.

Neither Koling nor Fish played perfectly throughout the three long rounds. With a sub-1000 rated first round, Fish dropped 6 strokes behind Koling, leaving him a lot of ground to gain with two rounds to go. However, the two flipped positions in the second round as Koling shot a sub-1000 rated round and Fish redeemed himself with a 1053-rated 57. Fish took a two stroke lead into the long 27-hole final round and he was able to keep himself on top.

A 1040-rated 93 was good enough to hold off the late round charge by Koling, who bounced back from a rough second round with a 1032-rated 95. It’s never easy to take down a big name like Big Jerm, but Fish recovered from first-round struggles to claim a big A-tier victory. Rounding out the top 5 were Joseph Mela, Mike Moser and Owen Hileman.

Mando Flores wins a close battle with Kevin Bates at the 2015 Outlaws event

Texas is known for its deep field of talented disc golfers and 34 of them showed up in Round Rock to compete in the 2015 Outlaws open division. There may not have been too many 1000-rated golfers in the field, but that didn’t stop Mando Flores and Kevin Bates from battling for the $1,000 top prize.

The two started out hot with 1000-rated rounds well above their own ratings, but Bates edged out Flores by 3 strokes heading into the next round. While Bates stumbled and lost his 1000-rated play, Flores persisted and overtook the lead with a one stroke cushion. However, Bates bounced back in the final round to regain that stroke and force a playoff.

It was a tight battle throughout the tournament, but Mando Flores was able to come through in the clutch and take the big A-tier victory this week. Joining him in the top 5 were, of course, Kevin Bates, Matt Odenwelder, Bradley Williams and Donald Ellsworth.

Looking ahead

The National Tour season may be over, but we’ve got the two United States Disc Golf Championship events left to look forward to. Next week, some of the best female golfers in the world will descend upon Ohio and battle it out for the U.S. title. We’ll see if Sarah Hokom can continue her strong play in the back half of this year and capitalize for a victory or if Allen, Pierce or Jenkins and claim another title for their strong resumes.
