Last week, the 2017 National Collegiate Disc Golf Championships were hosted at the Hippodrome Complex in North Augusta, SC April 12-15. Roughly 400 players from 70 different teams attended with the aspirations of bringing home the coveted national title. After seven rounds of competition, the national champion was crowned and it was once again Ferris State University standing atop the podium.
Ferris won their first national title in 2015 lead by team captain Brian Murphy. But as we all know, the second is always harder than the first. In 2016 Ferris was once again a heavy favorite to bring home the title. However, they fell short bringing home 5th place. Heading into the 2017 NCDGC, Ferris State was ranked 3rd, once again eying that second national title.
While shooting consistently in the team rounds, it was the singles rounds that catapulted the Bulldogs into first place. Ferris had three of its four members finishing inside the top 20 in scoring, with all three securing All-American honors. It was Brenden Tetloff’s national runner up scores that gave the team a shot at the overall title. Coming into the final day the Bulldogs had a 5-stroke lead which proved to be enough as they coasted to a final round score of 58, good enough for the title of National Champions.

Discmania has supported many collegiate teams during the 2017 season (Colorado State University, North Carolina State University, University of Wisconsin Platteville and Austin Community College) and while four of the five of those teams finished inside the top 20 (15th, 8th, 4th), Ferris State University was the team that brought home the trophy. We are very proud to support Collegiate disc golf and are excited to be a sponsor of this year’s national champion. Congrats Bulldogs!
