Team Discmania @ 2014 European Disc Golf Championships

The 2014 European Disc Golf Championships concluded last weekend in Geneva, Switzerland. Much thanks to our very visible presence in the European Disc Golf scene, Team Discmania was well-represented at the event.

Our German super talent Simon Lizotte was definitely one of the favourites for victory going to the event. The defending European Champion was able to take the lead early on in the tournament. Unfortunately Simon was struggling a bit with jet lag and general fatigue after flying back from his first PDGA Pro Worlds tournament just a couple days before the start of the European Championships. Playing two very long tournaments in a row proved to take off a bit of the edge we’ve seen in Simon’s game in many tournaments this year. Simon was able to hold the lead for 3,5 rounds of the 4-round tournament, but in the end had to settle for taking 2nd place despite shooting a sweet eagle on the par 5 final hole. Only 1 shot separated Simon from the 2014 Champion, Finnish Seppo Paju.

Team Discmania’s Leo Piironen (FIN) also gave a solid performance at EDGC 2014, ending up in the 5th place after holding the 2nd place for the 2 first rounds of the tournament. Other top 20 placements by Team Discmania members include Jerome Braun (GER) with his 14th place finish in MPO and Jessika Edvardsson (SWE) with her 15th place finish in FPO.

Finnish players dominate the scoreboard

Discmania CEO Jussi Meresmaa (right) is known for being one of the top promoters of the sport.

As a Finland-based company and an enterprise that has put a lot of effort in growing the sport of Disc Golf in Finland in the past few years, we are very happy to see the uprising of young Finnish talents at EDGC this year. Out of 18 medals dealt out in the tournament, Finnish players snatched a total of 8. 4 of these medals were gold, including Seppo Paju in MPO, Jenni Eskelinen in FPO, Ville Piippo in Masters and Markku Tohni in Senior Grandmasters. 7 of the top 10 finishers in MPO were Finnish players, a statistic that really speaks of the results of the Disc Golf boom in Finland.

“It was a great day for Finnish Disc Golf”, says Jussi Meresmaa, the CEO Discmania. “Over the past few years we’ve been developing a formula for growing the key aspects of this great sport with a lot of focus in new course development, equipment distribution, public and media relations and big international events. It’s been a great ride so far and we’ve been lucky to be able to be part of the growth of this sport, alongside clubs, associations, everyday players and other devoted Disc Golf companies that promote the sport. In the future we will be more present in other markets outside Finland too, aiming to create a similar Disc Golf boom in other parts of Europe and beyond.” Meresmaa continues.
