Last week Val and I traveled to Charlotte, NC to play the Carolina Clash, and check out the courses we will play for the 2012 World Championships. I have played Rennaisance (Renny) before but Nevin and Bradford were new for me.

Nevin was a wooded course that has the feel of a typical San McDaniel design.  The course is anchored by control and patience. Even playing the entire course from the short tees, it is easy to see that you don’t want to stray far from the fairway.

Bradford is another mostly wooded course with wide fairways (for Charlotte). The course has a unique and beautiful terrain, but could become nasty if you’re not hitting your line and have to sacrifice shots to get back on track.

Renny, the crown jewel of Charlotte, is by far the most challenging and longer course of the 2012 World’s courses.  With a good balance of woods and open holes, you need to take advantage of the birdie holes when the chance presents itself. Renny has multiple par 4’s and 5’s both in the woods and in the open.  The rounds at Renny are slow, with lots backups and long holes, bringing patience even more into play.

After a good week of practice I feel happy about spending sometime on the World’s courses. I have a lot to prepare for leading up to the tournament, but I’m looking forward to the challenge this year to defend my title. Val and I have put togather a little video for your viewing pleaseure. Enjoy!

Through the first 5 events I have been struggling to get my game to meet my expectations. But I have to say; there have been many positive aspects and growing experiences I will take away from these early season tournaments. Finding a groove in this game can be tricky, and not as easy as we as professionals make it seem. There are many things that go into finding the confidence to preform at your best; sometimes it can be as small as a single putt. With a few weekends off until the Glass Blown in Emporia, Kansas, I will continue to work on my game and keep my goals set to the highest standard.

I have to spend some major time around the basket and find my confidence when I step up to a putt.  I will also be spending some time at about 150’ and in to really hone in my short game. Refining these types of shots will improve my confidence with any throw after my tee shot, which will inevitably save me multiple strokes in a round.

Through the first three weeks I have not achieved the finishes I expected, but my progress is in the right direction. ; Starting the year with an 11^th place finish at the Otter Open was well, lets just say, unexpected and a real disappointment. Next, was the Gentleman’s Club Challenge in Las Vegas with a 4^th place finish. I had a couple well-played rounds so my confidence level was beginning to rise. This was a good build up to the Memorial Championship, the first National Tour of the year. After the tournament was all said and done 7^th was my final resting place. The week in Arizona was a very exciting week, with some truly great rounds shot and plenty of festivities around town. My personal week was filled with some rollercoaster play and more disappointment in my finish. Realizing that this is just the beginning of the season, I know have time to work on my game to meet those expectations. We have been enjoying some R&R in beautiful Fountain Hills, AZ after the tournament, but now its time to get back on the road and make our way East to Texas.
