If you catch the Discmania RV, the Maniac, on the highway or at your local course in 2018, it is safe to say that Team Discmania member Colten Montgomery is the man behind the wheel.
Montgomery first took command of the Maniac in August 2017 and is set to spend the next year traveling the country competing on the highest level.
When we interview our team members, we like to talk about their lives outside of disc golf world along with their plans for the upcoming season. For Montgomery, that conversation was pretty short. All this guy does is disc golf.
Colten Montgomery outside of disc golf…. That is such a tough question for me as my whole life revolves around disc golf. My family is my everything. Without the support of my father, mother, and brother I don’t think I would be where I am. They support me 100% in what I do and push me to be a better person.
My will and desire to obtain my goals at whatever cost. I strive to be the best disc golfer I possibly can, and I don’t think there is a ceiling on that so I will keep striving. Furthermore, I always try to encourage others while playing, even if they are competition. The last thing that separates me from the rest is I feel like I am good at taking advice when I need to.
Without a doubt the PD. The Discmania PD is a versatile disc that will hold pretty much whatever line I throw it on. It can be maneuvered for throws on those shorter, tight holes, or it can preform equally as well on those long, wide open, bomber holes.
This off season I did something I have never done before. Instead of spending the whole off-season in Colorado, where the weather does not cooperate to throw year-round, I spent a little over a month in southern California working for Discmania and sharpening my skills. I have noticed a big difference with my game in being in a place that allows you to play in nice weather year round.
With the Las Vegas Challenge, I feel very prepared. I have never played these courses so I got into town on last Friday night, February 16, and had a practice round in each day since. As far as expectations, I don’t want to shoot too high and be disappointed if I don’t reach it, however I have this thought in the back of my mind that I would like to take top 20 at the first PDGA National Tour event of the year. It’ll be a hefty goal, but gotta shoot for the stars!
First and foremost, I am excited to spend my first FULL season on the road as a touring professional. Last year I only got a taste of being on the road for the last three months of the season. I am also excited to make it back to my home state of Colorado for the High Plains Challenge. It was my first tournament I ever played 10 years ago, and I haven’t missed it since so that is definitely one I look forward to.
The Maniac so far is planned to hit 27 states this season and in those states we will be competing, hosting Combine Events, as well as Fantasy Doubles. Also, we will be at four of the bigger amateur events. Keep an eye out for the schedule to be posted soon!
I have three main goals for the season:
