USDGC Voices: Round 2

The 2015 United States Disc Golf Championship is halfway over and the leaderboard is starting to take shape. As the players walked off Hole 18 we caught up with them to get their thoughts on Round Two.

Will Schusterick

Overall: -3
Round Two: -5 (62)
Position: Tied-25

“Still made some easy mistakes today. Had a really good drive on Hole 18, went out of bounds and took a 5. Missed a birdie putt on Hole 15, went OB on Hole 16, probably missed four or five shots I probably should have hit. Every hole requires something different and coming down the stretch, you need to give yourself a chance and get some birdies and take out the possibilities of going over par on holes.”

Avery Jenkins

Overall: +2
Round Two: Even (67)
Position: 42

“Wow. It’s crazy how much better this tastes and it’s only two strokes better than yesterday. It’s weird how this place lays out and plays out sometimes. If you capitalize on two or three strokes on some holes, it all evens out in the end and you only end up a few shots better. Today, still had a few holes that bit me hard. Lost a disc on Hole 5 on an unfortunate third shot. All in all, I was putting pretty good. I hit three putts outside the circle and felt confident with the putter. I just need to keep it within the ropes. It’s always the game plan and just need to stick with it.”

Kyle Webster

Overall: +3
Round Two: +2 (69)
Position: 46

“Didn’t score very well today. Didn’t get many birdies. Managed to come in at a two-over. Feel like I’m still in it, just need some more birdies. I feel good and feel confident. I’m just not capitalizing when I need to.”

Dana Vicich

Overall: -1
Round Two: -2 (65)
Position: 32

“I felt a lot more comfortable out there today. I threw a lot better. Gave myself a lot of opportunities. Started out with three birdie opportunities, but didn’t cash in on them. I did get birdies on Hole 4 and Hole 5 and that felt pretty good. Unfortunately, went bogey on 16, double bogey on 17, and par on 18. The par on 18 felt good though.”

Dave Feldberg

Overall: -8
Round Two: -7 (60)
Position: Tied-11

“Slightly better day today. I played the same round, but this time instead of taking a 6 on Hole 2, I took a 6 on Hole 8 getting greedy. Then I battled back and took a three on Hole 17. Landed in the island on my second shot and took the three. Carded a 60 which is much better. Feel like I’m getting better on the course. This was my first time playing the alternate pin positions and it was a really different feel playing those pins. I’m ready to go now. I’m not much of a morning guy. Getting up at six in the morning isn’t my thing. Get to sleep in now and I’m not in 35th anymore. I’ll make my run like I usually do and have a chance in the end.”

Steve Brinster

Overall: -5
Round Two: -4 (63)
Position: Tied-20

“I said yesterday I needed to get my putting going and I did for the most of the round. Missed a couple putts… Holes 15, 16, 17. Easy three strokes right there. That would have brought me in at a 60 instead of a 63. Made a lot of good putts prior to that and one bad hole, on hole 11, took a double bogey. Beyond that, not thrilled with it, but moving in the right direction. It’s good that my putt is feeling better than it did. Just clean up a few mistakes and get something in the 50s tomorrow.”

Paul Ulibarri

Overall: -2
Round Two: Even (67)
Position: Tied-30

“Played pretty solid all day. I had a couple errant shots and then got to Hole 13 which is a pretty tough hole and caught a couple bad breaks. It’s just what happens out here when it gets a little windy. Caught the curb a couple times. Threw a few nice shots, but it adds up quick. I was happy with how I finished my round. After taking the 10, I finished two or three down. Just need to push and see what happens.”

Cam Colglaizer

Overall: -9
Round Two: -7 (60)
Position: Tied-7

“A lot happier today than I was yesterday. I stuck to the same game plan. I play aggressive wherever I go and the shots were flowing and I was keeping them inbounds and making putts until Hole 18. Threw out of bounds on my second and third shots and took a seven. Still a 60. I was in 22nd and will move up nice. I feel good moving into Friday. I’ll continue to be aggressive.”

Karl Johan Nybo

Overall: -3
Round Two: -1 (66)
Position: Tied-25

“Today felt good, especially the front nine. I Was really making my putts, driving was good too. Had a really good feeling all around. Just one bad hole, 888 (Hole 13). I’ve played the new pin position a few times in practice, but might have been a little too aggressive for the pin. In my mind, I was focused on getting it to the green, which is big, but up by the basket it is very narrow. Might be too narrow. Had a 9 there. Had one shot that skipped over the green with my putter. Another hit the curb instead of skipping and the one that went long. That’s the only bad hole I had.”

Zach Melton

Overall: -10
Round Two: -7 (60)
Position: Tied-4

“I’ve stuck to my game plan which is keeping it inbounds and picking up birdies where I can. I feel I did that with the exception of Hole 17 again today. That’s been my only OB stroke in both rounds. I’m not going to change anything for Friday. I putted much better today. If I had putted like that yesterday, I might have been high 50s for Round One. I’ll stick to the game plan.”

Alex Geisinger

Overall: -11
Round Two: -8 (59)
Position: 3

“59 feels good. 58 would have felt better if I didn’t go out of bounds on the last hole. Only went out of bounds one time in the round and it was that last hole. Left three or four strokes out there. Just same game plan tomorrow. Want to hit those putts I missed and move up in the field. I very happy to see the scoreboard and feel I don’t have much to improve on. Knock a few more strokes off tomorrow and fight for the lead.”

Nikko Locastro

Overall: -9
Round Two: -5 (62)
Position: Tied-7

“Had a slow start with a similar results. Ended up shooting a 62, but ended up birdie-birdie on the last two holes today which helped a little bit. I’m hoping I gained some strokes on the lead card. I know I can put a few rounds in the 50s to finish this tournament off. I have a lot more in me to bring to the table. I haven’t shot myself in the foot quite yet. I need to make some more putts and scoring better with fewer errors.”

Barry Schutlz

Overall: -7
Round Two: -3 (64)
Position: 15

“888 (Hole 13) got me again. I threw one bad shot on the approach to the basket. I got unlucky with a shot on the curb on the next shot. Just need to tighten up on 888 and I’d be just fine. Hit the band a lot on a lot of birdie putts and if I can hit a few of those I’ll be there again. I’m playing some good golf, just not scoring as good as I feel. Had my first OB today, but played smart and played aggressive when needed and conservative when needed as well. Just need to make some putts tomorrow.”

Jeremy Koling

Overall: -9
Round Two: -5 (62)
Position: Tied-7

“I feel like I’m playing really well for most holes. Just like most guys out here, a couple get you. For the most part, I’ve played within the ropes as much as I’ve wanted to. Playing safe and conserviate. A few spots where I want to go for it I am. I’m putting pretty well. I’ve missed a few  I would like to hit, but that isn’t the issue. I have to eliminate the double bogyes and triple bogyes. I hav eone triple and one double and four other bogey strokes. Keeping it in the ropes the next two rounds is crutial. I can’t win this tournament shooting in the 60s, I need to be in the 50s. Hoping for a few good rounds tomorrow and Saturday.”

Paul McBeth

Overall: -10
Round Two: -5 (62)
Position: Tied-4

“I feel good. I’m still making a lot of mistakes out there. I’ve had half good holes and half bad. There is a lot of room for improvement. Another 62, another 5 (shots) down. My putting was on point today. Made every putt inside the circle and some outside. Just bigger numbers today, made some mistakes, too many bogeys.”

Michael Johnansen

Overall: -9
Round Two: -3 (64)
Position: Tied-7

“Good week so far. A little up and down round. Not bad, a few shots crawled out of bounds, but feel good. No changes for tomorrow. Just keep it inbounds.”

Nate Doss

Overall: -16
Round Two: -5 (62)
Position: Tied-1

“Today felt a lot round One, but today on some holes I got an early OB and then I’d save the par. I think I did that three shots where I went OB and still saved the bar. I shot a five under, but if I take care of those, that’s an eight under. Really, it felt like a pretty easy day, but wasn’t as accurate off the tee and need to clean that up. I’m happy with today for sure.”

Nate Sexton

Overall: -16
Round Two: -8 (59)
Position: Tied-1

“Two straight 59s feel great and I’m looking for two more. Four 59s would be just right. Today was more of a roller coaster. I had three bogeys today where I only had one yesterday. Through 13 holes I think I only had one par on the scorecard. I had three bogeys and nine birdies and one par through 13, so kind of a strange round. I was playing aggressive and that says something. I’m happy with that. I had a lot looks at birdies. I’m not worried about what anyone else does. I’m going with my game plan and throwing the best shot I have. I’m not looking at scores until about three holes to go overall. Still a lot of time left.”
