As we said after Day One of the 2015 PDGA World Championship, the 143-person MPO field was split into two pools. The leaderboard was tough to read after Day One because of the split, but Day Two was where things would even out. After playing Moraine Lakeview Disc Golf Course for one round on Tuesday, the pool with the game’s top ranked players headed to Slippery Rock University to play rounds two and three, while the second pool took to the tighter Moraine Lakeview course. Plenty of the pros were in great position to make a move to the front and it was only a matter of time before we saw who would do it.

Will Schusterick crushes the Slippery Rock course to take a four-stroke lead

Will Schusterick played a solid first round at the wooded Moraine Lakeview course, carding a 58 for a 1045 rating. It was clear that 1045-rated play wasn’t going to be enough to separate someone from the crowd. Left in a bunched up tie for third with Simon Lizotte, Paul McBeth, and Eagle McMahon, someone would need to step it up at Slippery Rock.

Schusterick stepped up and then some. In the second round, Schusterick tore through the Slippery Rock course carding 14 birdies, an eagle, and no bogeys for a round of 16-under (51). This brought Schusterick all the way to the top of the leaderboard with Nikko Locastro and Paul McBeth not far behind.

The top pros played Slippery Rock again for the third round of Worlds, and Schusterick kept up the strong play. He calmed down a little bit, but his 1070-rated 54 kept him at the top of the leaderboard. Ricky Wysocki also crushed Slippery Rock and made up for a first round 60 that dropped him 5 strokes off of Ulibarri’s lead. With a 54 and a 53 at Slippery Rock, Wysocki was able to assume sole possession of second place (4 strokes off of Schusterick), while Nikko Locastro maintained steady play for third place (6 back of the lead). Paul McBeth and Eagle McMahon played well in the second and third rounds, landing themselves in a tie for the last spot in the top 5 (8 strokes off of the lead).

We’re only through three rounds in the MPO division and already a few guys are separating themselves from the crowd. There’s still plenty of time left, though, and the challenging Deer Lakes course is up next for the top of the leaderboard. We’ll see how things play out in Round 4

Sarah Hokom jumps to the top of the Women’s field

The top of the women’s leaderboard was pretty crowded after the first round at Moraine. Big changes were in the cards after two rounds at Knob Hill. With one round gone at Knob Hill, Val Jenkins assumed the top spot while Sarah Cunningham fell back two strokes. Catrina Allen’s even par brought her up into the fold, but the third round would shake things up.

Sarah Hokom stepped up her game in the second round at Knob Hill on Wednesday afternoon. Her 2-under 59 was good enough for the first 1000-rated women’s round of the tournament, and catapulted her into the lead. Val Jenkins cooled off a bit, but was able to hang on to second place, just 3 strokes behind Hokom. Ohn Scoggins also shot a solid round and jumped into third place, with Ragna Bygde and Catrina Allen rounding out the top 5, 6 strokes off of the lead.

The women are heading to Slippery Rock University for round 4 and we’ll see if they can own it the way the men’s field did for their rounds on Wednesday.

Patrick Brown bounces back, ties Yeti Reading for the lead in Masters

We’re used to seeing Patrick Brown tear through the Masters division, but his opening round at Knob Hill landed him further behind Jay Yeti Reading than he’d like. Heading into the third round, he was four strokes behind with one round to play at Moraine on Wednesday.

With a 1049-rated 58, Brown crushed the field and was one of just two competitors to break 60. By virtue of two strong performances on Day One, Reading was able to maintain a share of the lead with a 1022-rated 62. Rounding out the top 5 are Mike Moser (3 strokes back), Ken Climo, and Jonathan Baldwin (each 4 strokes back).

It’s still anyone’s game and Deer Lakes is sure to be a separator in the Masters field on Thursday.
